Biden meeting Congress leaders over Ukraine aid package

Joe Biden is meeting Congress’s top four leaders today to press for quick action on a bill that includes aid for Ukraine and avoiding a government shutdown.

The White House said Mr Biden invited the leaders to an Oval Office meeting to ensure US national security interests are “put first”.

The US government faces a partial shutdown in just four days unless it agrees new spending bills.

Mr Biden has piled pressure on the House of Representatives to vote on a $95bn (£74.9bn) national security package, most of which is aimed at supporting Kyiv in the fight against Russia.

It was passed by Congress’s other chamber, the Senate, two weeks ago.
