Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has downplayed his side’s hopes of winning La Liga this season ahead of Sunday’s game against Athletic Club.
“It’s complicated because the gap between (Barça and leaders Atletico) is very big,” he said in a press conference on Saturday.
“In the Champions League there’s no clear favourite. We have a two-legged tie against Paris Saint-Germain that we will try and get through.
“The team’s ambition is to win trophies, because we’re Barça, but we have to be realistic.”
On that realism line, Koeman continued: “Right now Barça aren’t (ready) to win many things. We are trying, improving, fighting… We have to be realistic about where we’re coming from the changes we’ve made…
“Not everything depends on one player (signing Eric Garcia). Barcelona always have to be prepared to fight but we have to be realistic.”
Koeman was speaking ahead of Athletic’s visit to Camp Nou on Sunday (21h) as his side look to extend their unbeaten run in La Liga to nine matches.
