Ballon d’Or Organisers Clarify Key Criteria for Selecting the 2026 Winner

The organisers of the Ballon d’Or have explained that winning the FIFA World Cup alone will not automatically secure football’s most prestigious individual award, despite the tournament’s significant influence on this year’s race.

According to the organisers, the Ballon d’Or is determined using a combination of factors rather than a single achievement. Voters are instructed to consider a player’s individual performances throughout the season, the impact they had in decisive matches, their team’s success, and their overall sporting conduct.

The clarification comes after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which has intensified debate over the leading contenders for the award. While outstanding performances on football’s biggest international stage are expected to carry considerable weight, they represent only one aspect of the voting process.

The organisers also stressed that players are judged on their contributions across the entire season, including performances for their clubs in domestic leagues and continental competitions, as well as their displays for their national teams.

They further noted that eligibility for the Ballon d’Or is not restricted to players competing in Europe. Footballers representing clubs outside the continent remain eligible for the award provided they meet the selection criteria and receive sufficient support from the panel of international journalists.

With the World Cup now concluded, attention has shifted to several players who enhanced their credentials through exceptional performances during the tournament. However, the organisers maintain that the eventual winner will be chosen based on a comprehensive assessment of the season rather than a single competition.
