Amazon Prime to start showing ads

If you have an Amazon Prime subscription, this is your one-month (just about) warning that you’ll be shown ads while watching TV shows and films unless you start paying an extra £2.99 a month.

The change comes in from 5 February.

It’s not clear when the ads will be played, and whether they will be shown before or during the content.

However, Amazon has said it wants to have “meaningfully fewer” ads than regular TV channels.

Customers will need to pay a monthly fee to go ad-free, totalling £35.88 a year.

It’s worth noting that live events, such as sports, already include adverts and will continue to do so.

Subscribers haven’t reacted well, with one person writing on X: “Seriously? @PrimeVideogotta be honest with you guys, this may be the last straw with Amazon. An added fee to keep from getting ads despite being a Prime member for years.

“@amazon’s quality of service and product has been going downhill. All while you keep raising the Prime annual fee.”

Others threatened to cancel their subscriptions, with another writing: “The whole point of paying £7.99 is to NOT have adverts. I may as well just cancel and suck up the adverts then. Bad move.”

Those who want to unsubscribe can do so at any time without a fee.

Annual Prime members will be able to get a pro rata refund of their subscription fee if they decide to cancel as a result of the change.
