A group of researchers have revealed some “strange” natural qualities that make Cristiano Ronaldo extraordinary.
Ronaldo has proved his exceptional qualities with five Ballon d’Or, including numerous clubs, individual and national trophies—making him unarguably one of the best footballers of all time. His amazing capabilities became subject of a study carried out by researchers in Ku Leven University, Belgium.
Results from the study on C. Ronaldo was conducted in collaboration with SciSports and presented at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, USA.
In total, the study examined Ronaldo’s performance in 7,000 games played in seven different competitions. Other footballers, including Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar Jr., were studied to gain insight into footballers’ reaction when playing under intense pressure.
Jesse Davis, a participant in the project, said: ‘We constructed a model that uses machine learning to estimate the amount of mental pressure experienced by the player in possession of the ball…The model analyses how he acts under pressure.’
David continued, ‘In a situation where the game is blocked in the 89th minute and a player decides to try to score instead of passing, our model will analyse if it was a good decision, if the shot was well executed, and how it affected the final result.’
The parameters are obviously different, from home or away matches to how decisive the match is also in terms of both teams’ seasons.
Another contributing scholar Jan Van Haaren added: ‘The ideal scenario is that they have stable performances, regardless of their pressure level.
‘However, the analysis shows that Cristiano Ronaldo does not feel any pressure at all. His performances are constant…
‘Neymar makes worse decisions.’
The researchers also found that Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero follows Ronaldo’s path while Luis Suarez is more comparable to Neymar in response to pressure.’
