Israeli airstrikes have forced around 40% of Lebanon’s 1.5 million students from their homes, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
It comes as the start of the school year for public schools in Lebanon has been postponed until 4 November, with around 60% of public schools currently being used as shelters.
OCHA’s report says there is now “urgent need” for Lebanon’s education ministry to receive support in strengthening and expanding its remote learning platforms, ensuring teacher training and student access to the internet.
It also said displaced students require access to “routine psychological support” as the ongoing crisis increases stress and anxiety, affecting their learning.
“Every day away from the classroom is a growing threat to children’s long-term physical and mental well-being,” says Jennifer Moorehead, country director of Save the Children in Lebanon.
“Schools should only be used as shelters as a last resort, and for the shortest possible period. We call for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further suffering and protect children’s right to education.”
