Cross-party groups of MPs accuse Braverman of ‘fanning flames of hate’ against British Muslims
The anger at Suella Braverman’s recent comments about the pro-Palestinian protests continues to rage, and a cross-party group of MPs has now released a statement condemning her.
The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for British Muslims has accusing the home secretary of “fanning the flames of hate” and “leaving British Muslim communities… feeling unsafe”.
The APPG is co-chaired by Sarah Owen, Labour MP for Luton North and shadow cabinet minister, and Paul Bristol, the Tory MP for Peterborough who was sacked from government last week for breaking with the government line and calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
In the statement, the MPs wrote that they are “deeply worried by the statements being made by the home secretary”.
They said that her “divisive comments that fuel hatred are leaving British Muslim communities in the United Kingdom feeling unsafe”.
They cited home Office statistics showing hate crimes against British Muslims rose by 25% last year, but said it is “unclear whether the home secretary has visited a single Mosque or mainstream Muslim organisation to try to support communities”.
Her recent comments, they said, “would generalise ordinary British Muslims as being extremist and terrorist sympathisers”.
They also accuse her of “fanning the flames of hate and inspiring the far-right”, and question how British Muslims can feel safe in Britain.
