The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Bayelsa State has issued a strong warning to Governor Douye Diri, declaring that nothing will deter the party from seizing control of the state in the 2027 governorship election.

The party’s state chairman, who spoke at a press conference in Yenagoa on Wednesday, dismissed suggestions that the government might attempt to buy off or intimidate opposition figures ahead of the polls. He maintained that the NDC is united and resolute in its mission to unseat the incumbent administration.

“We are not going to be distracted by any form of appeasement or threat,” the chairman stated. “No amount of money or political manoeuvring can stop us from taking over Bayelsa in 2027. The people are tired and ready for change.”

The NDC also accused Governor Diri of failing to deliver on key campaign promises, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, youth employment, and healthcare. They argued that the state has stagnated under his leadership and that the opposition offers a credible alternative.

Responding to recent comments from the governor’s camp suggesting that the NDC lacks the structure to challenge the ruling party, the chairman fired back: “They can keep deceiving themselves. We have the numbers, we have the grassroots, and we have the will. Governor Diri should focus on governance rather than peddling falsehoods about our capacity.”

The party further cautioned against any attempt to use state apparatus to suppress opposition activities, warning that such actions would be met with fierce resistance from the electorate. “Bayelsans are watching, and they will not be silenced,” he added. “The days of political intimidation are over.”

When asked about the possibility of defections or internal sabotage, the chairman was emphatic: “Our house is in order. Every single member of this party is committed to the goal. No inducement, no promise of office, no threat—nothing can break our resolve. We are taking over in 2027, and that is non-negotiable.”

The NDC concluded by calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a level playing field, insisting that the will of the people must prevail. “We trust that the electoral body will do its job impartially, but we are also prepared to defend our mandate by every lawful means,” the chairman stated.

Governor Diri’s administration has yet to officially respond to the NDC’s remarks, but political observers expect a rebuttal from the ruling party in the coming days.
