Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has shed light on the confrontation involving England midfielder Jude Bellingham during their Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred during England’s goalless draw with Ghana, with tensions rising shortly before the halftime break following a challenge from Bellingham on Ghana defender Jerome Opoku. The tackle sparked strong reactions from the Ghana bench and led to a heated exchange involving the Real Madrid midfielder.
Speaking after the match, Queiroz explained that his intention was not to escalate the situation but rather to calm the England international.
“My intention was to tell him to cool down with that tackle.
“Then he had a bad reaction with some bad names.
“I told him, ‘You can insult me but not my players.’
“But this is football. It was an exchange of emotions.”
The Portuguese tactician downplayed the disagreement, insisting that such moments are not uncommon in highly competitive matches where emotions often run high.
Bellingham also played down the incident, suggesting it was simply part of the intensity that comes with representing one’s country at the World Cup. The England midfielder maintained that there was mutual respect despite the disagreement and that both sides were fully focused on helping their teams achieve a positive result.
The encounter eventually ended in a 0-0 draw, with Ghana earning praise for their disciplined defensive display against one of the tournament favourites. The result left both teams well placed in the race for qualification to the knockout stages.
