A deal for the 28-year-old, who has scored 453 goals in 531 games, would break the current record of €100 million that Real Madrid splashed out on to sign Gareth Bale.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League club made two approaches in the last three weeks, and sources close to Messi refused to rule out the possibility of a move.

Messi’s current deal at Camp Nou ends in 2018, whilst it has emerged that Barcelona’s leading all-time top scorer requires certain assurances if he is to remain at the club, though any potential move is more likely to happen in 2017/18.

Manchester United have again been linked with the superstar, as they consistently set their sights on the world’s biggest names under executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Messi and his father are accused of using a chain of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying taxs on €4.16m of the footballer’s income earned through image rights between the 2007 and 2009 seasons.
