Why Ralf Rangnick is leaving Manchester United

Ralf Rangnick will no longer step into a consultancy role at Manchester United following his unsuccessful time in charge as interim manager.

The German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Old Trafford dugout on a temporary basis in November and had been due to move into a two-year consultancy position at the end of the 2021/22 season.

However, after he was named head coach of the Austrian national team in April, Rangnick and United have now scrapped the original agreement for him to continue behind the scenes.

The ‘demands of his new role’ are given as the reason behind the decision. Rangnick revealed the news in a press conference with Austria on Sunday.

In a statement, Man Utd said: “We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his efforts as interim manager over the past six months.

“By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus solely on his new role as manager of the Austria national team and will not therefore be taking up a consultancy role at Old Trafford.

“We would like to wish Ralf the best of luck in this next chapter of his career.”

Rangnick has overseen a hugely turbulent period for Manchester United both on and off the pitch. Embarrassing heavy defeats to rivals Manchester City and Liverpool and lowly Brighton contributed to their worst-ever Premier League season, while there have been constant murmurings of discontent emerging from within the camp.

Former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has already started work as United’s next manager and has plenty of work to do to steady the ship. The Dutchman has already held a recruitment meeting, with a versatile forward, two central midfielders and a centre-back primary targets
