Why Neymar is delaying contract renewal at PSG

Neymar’s decided to buy some time due to Barcelona’s interest. It’s true that there is an agreement in principle between the forward and Paris Saint-Germain to extend his deal until 2026, but media reports confirm he will delay signing anything for as long as he can.

He hopes to gift Barcelona a few weeks to make a possible offer. In no case will he extend his current relationship with PSG until he’s heard from Barça.

Thank you for watching

PSG want to confirm Neymar’s renewal in April, even, if possible, before the Champions League semifinal against Manchester City, with the first leg set for April 28. They want to tie up the futures of their two star players, the other being Kylian Mbappe, with the duo both out of contract in 2022.

In the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, PSG are willing to maintain Neymar’s salary, one of the highest in football, and pay him a signing-on bonus.

Neymar J.r will delay the redaction of the contract, which is being analysed by lawyers in Brazil and France. And after, he won’t sign until PSG’s course is run this season, in both the Champions League and Ligue 1, which is proving surprisingly difficult for them this season.

BARÇA WAIT

Neymar, who pushed to return to Camp Nou in 2019, knows his name is on the table again despite the financial problems at the club. The Neymar factor could be key when it comes to speaking with Lionel Messi over his renewal, as Andre Cury, Barça former man in South America, suggested in an interview with SPORT recently.

Joan Laporta is working against the clock to strengthen the squad for next season. Players need to leave to bring in cash and make space on the wage bill. Meanwhile, Barça are still alive in La Liga, so it’s impossible to make radical decisions on players still fighting for a domestic double.

For that reason, Neymar won’t pressure Barça. His possible signing is one of the operations that will depend on departures in attack.

Neymar’s father, who is in charge of negotiations, knows the situation is different with Laporta than Bartomeu. This time, there are no issues between the player and the club. The setting is unique, too, because Neymar has just one year to run on his deal in Paris.

No one should doubt that if a deal for Neymar and a reunion with Lionel Messi is possible, the Brazilian will do everything necessary to help reach an agreement. In 2019, for example, he would have accepted a significant drop on his PSG salary.
