Arsenal have finally sacked coach Unai Emery following the club’s defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.
In the wake of Arsenal’s disappointing Europa League loss which extended their winless run to seven games in all competitions, Josh Kroenke released a statement on behalf the Arsenal board and owners, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.
“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success,” reads the statement from Josh.
Fans of the London club have been frustrated and angry in recent weeks–since Emery’s performance as Arsenal manager nose-dived. The Gunners, unavoidably, turned against the Frenchman and unequivocally called for his sack. The request gained ground during Thursday’s game at the Emirates.
Arsenal are currently eight on the league Premier League table, behind Wolves, Sheffield United and Burnley. Former Arsenal player Freddie Ljungberg has been appointed to manage the club pending when a better replacement is found.
“We have asked Freddie to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach,” a statement from the club said. “We have full confidence in him to take us forward.”
