UK News Update: Elderly couple killed in head-on collision in the Scottish Borders

An elderly man and woman have been killed in a head-on road collision which left another person injured in the Scottish Borders.

The 79-year-old man was driving a red Kia Venga with the woman, 85, in the passenger seat when they were involved in a collision with a blue Kia Sportage on the A697 between Carfraemill and Greenlaw, near the town of Lauder.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened around 4.30pm on Friday.

The female driver of the Kia Sportage was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment, Police Scotland said.

The road was closed for seven hours after the collision.

Police have now launched an investigation, calling on any drivers who witnessed the crash or who have information or dashcam footage to get in touch.

Road Policing Sergeant Kosmas Papakyriakou said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of those involved in this incident.”

Woman hit by lorry on A2 in Kent

Elsewhere, a woman has died after being struck by a lorry on the A2 in Kent in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The victim is thought to have been travelling in a grey BMW which stopped on the coastbound carriageway.

She was declared dead at the scene of the incident, on the London-bound carriageway close to Dartford Heath around 2.45am.

The driver of the white DAF lorry stopped following the collision.

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit has launched a probe which led to the road being closed.

The coastbound carriageway has since reopened.

Anyone who has information or dashcam footage is urged to call 101.
