Thrown into a lake by Cristiano Ronaldo in a fit of frustration with journalists, the microphone belonging to a Correio da Manha reporter has been recovered by a diver, Marca reports.
Out for a walk in Lyon before Portugal’s crucial third group match against Hungary, Ronaldo snatched the microphone that had been thrust in front of him and tossed it into the nearby lake.
Pressure had been mounting on the forward following his penalty miss in the draw against Austria and his previous criticism of Iceland as having ‘a small mentality’.
The Portuguese TV channel CMTV were able to retrieve the microphone with the aid of an equipped diver and the news outlet have decided to auction off the now famous device.
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to a good cause, the Holy Family Psychopedagogic Rehabilitation Centre, a support centre for disabled children on the island of Ronaldo’s birth, Madeira.
The TV channel has set up a phone line for which the 60 euro-cent calls by members of the public will serve as charitable donations, with the microphone being presented to whoever makes the most calls and therefore the biggest donation.
