More than 130,000 spectators turned up to watch the parade, where about 2,600 participants dressed up in costumes, according to the organizer.

Fourteen Israelis who survived the Holocaust of World War II took part in the beauty pageant. Ginis was born in Russia and was two days old when Russia entered World War II and almost died of starvation as her grandfather died, as an infant during the starvation during the war.

The Tihar festival is the second most important event for Nepalese Hindus. During the celebration people worship cows, considered to be the incarnation of Lakshmi, Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity.

Devotees started to arrive at the Golden Temple in the pre-dawn hours to seek blessings on Diwali festival.

The festival coincides with the Bandi Chorh Diwas which is also celebrated at the Golden Temple to mark the return of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru or the Master of the Sikhs, to Amritsar after his release from Gwalior fort during the reign of Mughal emperor Jahangir.
