“Gangster Paradise” rapper Coolio was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport last weekend on charges of carrying a stolen firearm in his briefcase. He had already passed through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) before the alarming discovery was made, according to media reports.
FoxNews reported that a 39-year-old man traveling with Coolio had intended smuggling the gun across security.
Unfortunately, the weapon was detected and the carrier was put under arrest at the LAPD Pacific Division jail. Subsequent interrogations confirmed the bag containing a loaded gun was Coolio’s. But at that time, he had already boarded another plane.
The report quotes airport police Officer Alicia Hernandez as saying, “an investigation found the bag contained items that belonged to the man’s traveling companion who passed through the screening area and boarded an aircraft.
Officers found the other man, later identified as Coolio, and booked him on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked as 53-year-old Artis Leon Ivey Jr. of Las Vegas.”
Following the rapper’s arrest, his “innocent accomplice” was released from jail.
A report from TMZ quotes Coolio’s representative as saying that the firearm belongs to a member of the Compton star’s security team, adding that he was fully cooperating with police.
Coolio has since released a YouTube video where he said the police incident was “a misunderstanding”. The rapper filmed himself as a free man having dinner at a restaurant named P.F. Chang’s.
“I don’t know what’s going to be the result of this in the future but for now I’m fine and I appreciate everybody’s concerns,” he said. “We gotta push on and try to forward, forward hip-hop.”
Other reports say Coolio was arrested on Saturday night but was released shortly afterwards, on a $37,808 bail.
