The United States is “actively engaged” in efforts to find therapies for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus outbreak that has resulted in 160 suspected deaths out of 670 suspected cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a U.S. CDC official said on Friday.
“We are rapidly evaluating the landscape of products that are available, determining what products may be the most appropriate, and determining the best way that we can ensure the safe and effective delivery of therapeutics in the appropriate way to assess their efficacy,” Dr. Satish Pillai, the incident manager for the CDC’s Ebola response, said in a briefing.
The U.S. has the capacity to test for Ebola because of its integrated laboratory network, which is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pillai said.
