Borussia Dortmund have officially announced that midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has joined Manchester United as the latest high-profile footballer to leave the Bundesliga outfit this summer, in the footsteps of Mat Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan.

The Armenian international had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford recently.

Reports say that although there has been no official confirmation from United, Dortmund have gone ahead to released a statement saying the 27-year-old will leave this summer.

It read: “The paths of Borussia Dortmund and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan separate from this summer. BVB has complied, after intensive discussions, with the wish of the Armenian national team member to join Manchester United.

“Based on a completely new situation, this transfer was a difficult trade-off for us. Had we refused it, the player would have left us on a free transfer in 2017 and we would have only delayed the matter of a replacement by a year.”

Mkhitaryan has spent the last three seasons at Dortmund, scoring 40 goals from 136 appearances in all competitions. He scored a total of 23 goals for the club last season.

The cost of transfer is expected to be around £30m.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s switch to the Old Trafford will make him the third star to join the prestigeous club, following Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
