After 10 memorable years at Bayern Munich, Arjen Robben has decided to retire from top-flight football.

Prior to ending his blossoming career in Bavaria, football pundits speculated that the former Netherlands winger would move to a club in the Chinese Super League (CSL). He was also linked to other clubs in his native country Holland.

However, Robben announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday, saying he has “without doubts, made the hardest decision” of his career by hanging up his boots for good.

Robben, who had stints with Real Madrid and Chelsea, said in an interview as per AD: “At the moment I am fit and healthy and as a fan of many other sports, I want to keep it that way for the future. So, I will definitely stop, but it is good that way.”

He continued, “Top athletes are known for their selfish attitude and I have certainly not been an exception to that. That is why I especially want to thank my family for the unconditional support, understanding and love.

“It is time for the next chapter and I look forward to spending more time with my wife and children and enjoying all the beauty that is still ahead of us.”

Robben will be remembered by Bayern fans for his part in the iconic “Robbery” partnership with Franck Ribery.

Robben won silverware with Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSV Eindhoven. He made a total of 309 appearances for the German club side, grabbing 8 Bundesliga titles, a UEFA Champions League and 5 DFB-Pokals.

As a 19-year-old, Robben made his international debut in a friendly match against Portugal in 2003. He played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups. His retirement from international football was announced on 17 October, 2017 after his team’s unsuccessful qualifying campaign.
