Apple co-founder Stephen Gary “Steve” Wozniak announced on Friday the launch of an online institute which offers coding lessons.
The Apple II inventor has made invaluable contributions to the company’s amazing growth in over 40 years but says he hopes to do more with reprogramming tech education and addressing skills gap among job seekers across the U.S.

Steve lent his nickname “Woz U” to the online learning institute which is set to offer digital skills through a subscription-based curriculum.
“Our goal is to educate and train people in employable digital skills without putting them into years of debt,” said Wozniak during the launch.
“People often are afraid to choose a technology-based career because they think they can’t do it. I know they can, and I want to show them how.”
Woz U aims recruit people into the workforce with ease; it also promises to be affordable. Creating long-term financial stability for a new generation of workers in the following fields: computer support specialists, software developers, data science, mobile apps and cybersecurity programs, forms the core of its objectives.
The Arizona-based institution launched its online programs on Friday. Plans are underway to establish campuses in more than 30 cities across the country and the world.
Although the announcement suggests that Wozniak is the sole founder of Woz U, a footnote below the announcement says it is part of the Southern Careers Institute, a private, for-profit school with seven locations across Texas.
“My entire life I have worked to build, develop, and create a better world through technology and I have always respected education,” Wozniak said. “Now is the time for Woz U, and we are only getting started.”
In 2019, Woz U plans a 12-to-16 month-long accelerator program that is intended help school leaders spot the institute’s best students and place them in leading technology companies. These chosen students will also “learn how to finance and capital raise for start-ups,” according to the website.
A spokesperson for Woz U failed to disclose the tuition prices but stressed that “the cost of tuition would vary based on the student’s program or retraining needs.”
“Each platform will offer students personalized learning to meet their needs,” the spokesperson said.
