Although the 67-year-old programmer and computer engineer usually buys the new iPhone models as soon as they are launched, he wants to chart a new course this time because he still loves his iPhone 7.

Wozniak will not be available on 3 November to add his characteristic bonhomie to the global event, and he will surely be missed.

Speaking with CNBC in an interview, Woz explained that his decision not to buy the new iPhone X this time will not apply to upcoming models. He attended Money 20/20 conference in Las Vegas on Monday.

“I’d rather wait and watch that one,” Wozniak said at the conference.

“I’m happy with my iPhone 8 – which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6, to me.”

Preorder sales for iPhone X is scheduled to start on Friday 27 October with first shipments expected one week later.

Media reports confirm Woz often carry different iPhone models with him wherever he goes, but his decision to omit the newest model comes as a big surprise to many.

“For some reason, the iPhone X is going to be the first iPhone I didn’t – on day one – upgrade to. But my wife will, so I’ll be close enough to see it,” Wozniak said.

The company’s previous iPhone models resemble each other and are mostly unrecognizable at first sight but the X, as Apple described it, is expected to be “the smartphone of the future.”

Woz said earlier this year that iPhones are expensive. Unfortunately for the smartphone fans, the news that  iPhone X (256GB) will cost an additional $1,149 is heartbreaking.
