Eight people have died after an elevator they were in, malfunctioned and crashed from the 18th floor of an apartment building, authorities confirmed today.
Reports say no occupant of the construction lift survived the fall on the building site located in Shandong province, eastern China.
The Longkou city government in the said province publicized on its official microblog page that the elevator fell from the 18th storey of the building under construction.
Eight people who were in the elevator when it fell Friday were immediately taken to hospitals but none survived, the government said.
Despite improvements in recent years, work safety remains a problem in China, where regulations are routinely ignored and cost-cutting by management often lead to accidents.
In March, a 43-year-old woman died after being trapped for a month in a lift in a residential building in Xian after it was shut down without warning by maintenance workers.
In late May, at least one plant worker and a firefighter were killed and 18 others injured after an explosion rocked a battery storehouse in eastern Jiangsu province, known as an industrial hub.
At least two people were killed and five others injured the previous month when a fire broke out at an underground construction site at an airport in Shanghai.
September last year witnessed a 20-year-old Robin Llyr Evans from Wales was killed after falling into a lift shaft while working at a tennis center in Wuhan.

This is tragic. Elevators are supposed to undergo maintenance checks at intervals. It’s more likely that the building management and company failed to do their job. They’ll suffer for it but it won’t bring back the lives already lost.
